What is it they say about business? “If you can’t beat ’em, buy ’em?” That’s what Google did with Fitbit. Kiss $2.1-billion goodbye. The Week:
Google has expanded beyond its roots as the go-to online search engine and delivered a portfolio packed with software, operating systems and – more recently – a range of hardware devices.
None of which have become a success in the likes of Apple or Samsung.
Its Pixel smartphone range is widely regarded as a true rival to Apple’s iPhones and the Samsung Galaxy range.
No it isn’t. Rubbish.
The takeover is certainly the clearest sign yet that Apple’s position at the top of the smartwatch pile may come under threat, but Google has a mountain to climb to reach its rival.
Don’t hold your breath on the dethroning ceremonies.
