Perspective is everything. My wife is an optimist. I am a realist, a pragmatist. From her perspective, she thinks I’m a pessimist. My neighbor is a pessimist. He thinks I’m an optimist. See the perspective issue?
So, is Apple Inc. in decline? It depends upon how decline is defined. iPhone sales are in decline and have been for a couple of years. Ipso facto and alakazam– Apple is in decline.
Yet, Apple’s product line has expanded, revenue on each is growing, and the company has so much profit coming in the doors that it gives money away to investors, pays for an enormous R&D budget, and buys back its own expensive stock.
Does that sound like a company in decline?
Two quarters ago, the iPhone represented less than half the company’s revenue. In the last quarter, it represented more than half. Elsewhere, the Mac had its best year ever. iPad is growing steadily. Apple’s Services are the second-largest revenue category and the new Wearables are higher than iPad and growing even faster than Services.
Does any of that look as though Apple is in decline?
The company seems to be righting the wrongs of the Jony Ive design era and becoming more pragmatic about business. New iPhones have greater thickness and weight but even more battery life.
Guess which one customers want?
Mac professional customers ranted for years that Mac Pro was a lame product and now they can’t wait to spend twice as much on a machine aimed only at professionals.
Apple’s App Stores bring in more revenue than all other app stores combined; Google, Windows, Amazon, whatever. If Apple has a glaring weakness, it’s Apple Music vs. Spotify.
I read a missive from an anti-Apple screed writer, one who claims to use Apple products but writes mostly negative criticisms which have little based in fact and less insightful considerations.
Why I may dump Apple in 2020… and why you should consider it too
Dude, call me when you’ve used Windows or Chromebook only for a few years.
What’s the problem?
The mishmash of USB-C and Lightning, the fact that Apple Pencil doesn’t work on some devices, the intermingling of Touch ID and Face ID, useless features like the Touch Bar, and much more.
There is no mishmash on Windows? Are there some Windows or Android accessories that do not work on other devices? How does Touch ID and Face ID intermingle? I like the Touch Bar. It’s more useful than the hardware function keys.
Methinks someone came up with a cute headline but struggled to find information to match it.
There would be downsides to shifting from Apple, and it’s only fair that I mention them. AppleCare is a good warranty plan, and Apple’s distribution of retail stores where you can get help and support is second to none.
Also, while a three-year-old bit of tech is usually worthless on the secondhand
What? An anti-Apple screed writer found something good about Apple? I learned a long time ago that anyone can argue any side of an issue. Apple hardware is too expensive? Sure, compared to cheap crap. Compare Apple devices to the best available elsewhere and suddenly the price tag difference isn’t so much.
All the noise about Apple’s declining fortunes and future because of a long list of problems is closer to nonsensical criticisms with little merit. Look closely at the shade of green on the other side of the fence.
It might look tasty from a distance but there are bugs and worms and poison there, too.
